Completed in the mid 1800s and located in central Melbourne, the Old Melbourne Gaol is constructed in blue stone and still contains the original cells and historic features. In these cells some of Australia’s most notorious criminals were held, including the infamous bush ranger Ned Kelly.
Old Melbourne Gaol is now a museum that introduces visitors to the past, present and future of crime and justice in the state of Victoria. It was the first extensive gaol complex in Victoria and includes the Former City Watch House and City Courts Buildings. Though it was used briefly during World War II, it formally ceased operating as a prison in 1924, with parts of the gaol being incorporated into the RMIT University.
Engrained into Melbourne’s rich history, this incredible space offers multiple options for the ultimate glam or grunge vibe. Dress the venue up with chandeliers and candles, or play on the rawness of the bluestone building. Perfect for those who are after something a little more unique, this city icon retains the integrity of its original charm, whilst offering a blank shell opportunity with unrivalled creative potential. The Old Melbourne Gaol can accommodate up to 250 guests.
Whether you are passionate about history, or just wowed by the beautiful spaces, this precinct offers the right space for your next event.
