Insa is a Korean restaurant and karaoke bar that follows the tradition of Korean karaoke bars known as noraebang. Insa was created by Seoul-born chef Sohui Kim and Ben Schneider of the Good Fork fame. The bar, where Hawaiian-shirt-clad bartenders serve Korean-inspired tiki cocktails, is a far cry from your average karaoke joint. Down to brass tax. Insa has five private karaoke rooms where up to 22 guests can butcher tunes ranging from Bieber to Benatar. The NYC karaoke bar offers great food, questionable singing, and banging Korean food.

If it wasn’t for the vintage records for sale outside, the entrance to RPM Underground would look more like a New York subway station’s – and the interior isn’t much different from one. The private rooms – with themes including pinball, ‘70s Playboy, and The Avengers – can be rented for 5 to 40 people, and can be connected in configurations for up to 600. On weekend afternoons, RPM Underground offers a bottomless brunch package for $39 per person, delivered directly to your chosen karaoke room.

You can rent the entire space for up to 120 people, and throw in your very own piano player for an additional fee. Semi-private spaces can accommodate smaller parties, and the menu serves mid-century dinner party fare and specialty cocktails.

In 2016, Roberto and Zaida Williams opened up their home to lyrical strangers and never stopped. Every evening, their Williamsburg home transforms into Lion’s Roar Karaoke House, which retains the hospitable atmosphere of someone’s home with added elegance for entertaining. Blue lights light up the living room into a lounge and the kitchen is available to store cakes, pizzas, or alcoholic beverages – guarded by life-size mannequins of Batman and Robin. It’s like the house parties you tried to throw in high school, but your parents are home, and they’re cooler than you.


Lion’s Roar can host up to 30 people from 6pm to midnight during the week and to 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. There is a cleaning fee since the Williamses do it all themselves, but it’s a small price to pay to forgo the sticky floors of crowded karaoke bars.
