The Shakespeare Room is located on the ground floor of the Mitchell building and commemorates the three hundredth anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Arthur G Benfield’s stained-glass window 'The Seven Ages of Man', depicts a scene from 'As You Like It'. The Shakespeare Room is ideal for small dinners and cocktail parties for up to 15 people.

Shakespeare Room 

The Gallery Room is located on the ground floor of the Mitchell building and adjoins the Friends Room. A spacious heritage-listed room ideal for conferences, luncheons, dinners, weddings and cocktail parties. The room is charming and spacious with high ceilings and a decorative stained-glass window, it is ideal for conferences, luncheons, dinners and cocktail parties. The Gallery Room is often used in conjunction with the Friends Room for weddings, cocktails and dinner events. It can accommodate up to 200 guests.

Venue hire includes tables (trestle or dining), conference chairs, 2 x LED 90” screens, laptop, stage, lectern & microphone.

Gallery Room 

The Friends Room is located on the ground floor of the historic Mitchell building and is the original Mitchell Reading Room which opened to the public in 1910.  The perfect venue for evening cocktail events, and the original Mitchell Library Reading Room.  The room features enameled steel and leadlight bookcases lining the walls and lounge seating included in the room, making it an ideal space for cocktail parties or dinner events. It can accommodate up to 150 guests.

Venue hire includes tables (trestle or dining), lounge chairs, coffee tables and conference chairs. 

The Friends Room is available on weekends and after 6 pm Monday to Friday.

The Dixson Room is located on the ground floor of the Mitchell building and has views across the Domain and Woolloomooloo. A versatile and spacious room with high ceilings and prints from the Library’s collection adorning the walls, it is ideal for conferences, luncheons, talks and book launches. 

Venue hire includes tables (trestle or dining), conference chairs, stage, data projector, screen, laptop, sound system, lectern & microphone. It can accommodate up to 200 guests.

Dixson Room 

A state-of-the-art 344-seat auditorium, located below the Mitchell Library Reading Room. 

The auditorium is equipped to host high-end productions and performances, and vastly expands the diversity of events offered by the State Library.  

The venue includes an easy-to-operate, high-tech audio-visual system and includes two greenrooms and an adjoining catering and registration area, known as ‘the Glasshouse’.

Library Auditorium

The Library Bar is located on the rooftop of the historic Mitchell Building and features unique views across to the Harbour and city skyline.  

The Library Bar is available for private hire before 2pm Wednesday - Saturday or anytime Monday - Tuesday.  

Venue hire is $4,000 + catering and security.

Venue hire includes café style furniture, sound system and microphone.  It can accommodate up to 300 guests and is an 18+ venue.

The State Library is home to many spectacular venue hire spaces available for your next event. The grand elegance of the historic Mitchell building, coupled with the modern versatility of the Macquarie building, makes the Library a charming and unique setting to host a variety of events.

The Vestibule

The Paintings Galleries is located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, the Library has venues to accommodate a diverse range of events, from small meetings to large workshops; presentations, film screenings, hybrid events, cocktail parties, weddings and more.

More than 300 original artworks from the Library’s unique collection of landscape and portrait paintings are on permanent public display. 

Located on Level 1 of the Mitchell building are the Painting’s Galleries which include 3 large interconnecting spaces with high ceilings and parquet flooring. It can accommodate up to 350 guests.

The Macquarie Room is a versatile light-filled room, featuring a glass wall overlooking the courtyard between the old and new buildings of the State Library, and often used as the catering area for the Metcalfe Auditorium. The Macquarie Room is ideal for meetings, presentations, workshops, and luncheons. 

Venue hire includes trestle tables, conference chairs, 2 x LED 75” screens and a laptop. It can accommodate up to 100 guests.
