Ashburnham Garden

Nearest station:Westminster (0.4 km)(go to map)220

The space now known as Ashburnham Garden was once the Refectory of the Monastery, with the north and east walls still standing. The lower part of the walls dates back to at least the 12th century, while the gothic windows above are 14th century additions. While the building was intact, the Commons sat there for Parliaments throughout the 15th century. It was also the location at which the announcement was made in 1162 to the electors that Thomas Becket had unanimously been chosen as Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held until his assassination eight years later. Midway through the 16th century the building was partially demolished, with the stones used to build Somerset House on the Strand. The open space then became the garden of Ashburnham House.
