**The Council Room at The Geological Society is a large meeting room for hire in Mayfair.**

The Council Room used to be used for meetings of Council and other Society committees.

The Council Room Located on the first floor up the grand staircase from the reception area this recently refurbished room has plenty of natural daylight.

**Founded in 1807 by 13 gentlemen over dinner, The Geological Society is the oldest national geological society in the world.** 
 
The Society has resided in Burlington House, which is a Grade II listed building in the heart of Central London, since 1874. 
 
The Geological Society setting and facilities provide a stunning and welcoming environment for day time conferences, meetings and events,  receptions and intimate dinners. 
 
Located on the ground floor, the lecture Theatre and Lower Library provides an inviting setting for conferences. 

The Meeting Room is accessible through two doors from the Lower Library. This room is used for lectures and meetings of Society and related organisations. 

Refurbished as a lecture theatre in 1972-73, it had formerly been laid out in 'Parliamentary' style, the President seated on a throne-like chair on a raised dais at the end of the room. 

The Theatre was refurbished with help from the Society's Petroleum Group in 1999, and then again for the Bicentenary in 2007. 

It was named the Janet Watson Lecture Theatre in 2009, in honour of Professor Janet Vida Watson FRS (1923-1985), of Imperial College London, the Society's first woman President (1982-1984).

The Lower Library was originally the Society's Main Library when the first floor rooms housed its museum collection. 

It is now used mainly to store foreign periodicals and is used for social gatherings and for refreshments when scientific meetings are being held in the Lecture Theatre.

**The William Buckland Room at The Geological Society is a stylish meeting room for hire in Mayfair.**

The basement room was converted for use as a committee room in 1988 when bookcases were installed to house the library's collection of rare books.

The Rev. William Buckland was a fellow of the Royal Society (1818) and Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Oxford. He became Oxford's first Reader in Geology (1819) and was President of the Geological Society from 1824-26 when the Society obtained its Royal Charter.

Located on the first floor of the building, this stunning, multi-level Victorian library is an ideal location for film and photographic shoots.

Upper Library

**The Arthur Holmes Room at The Geological Society is a stylish meeting room for hire in Mayfair.**

Acquired in 1984, this room has been named after Arthur Holmes as a tribute to his profound contribution to Earth science. The room is used for committee meetings and to entertain speakers at the Society's scientific meetings.

Located on the ground floor, the Arthur  Holmes Room provides a versatile Space for a small boardroom meeting, break out room or an intimate private dinner.
