New York summers don't mess around: 90-degree heat, blowout-killing humidity, and the saunas that are subway cars. It's going to be an especially hot one this year – don't they say that every year? – which means more reasons than ever to find somewhere worth escaping to.

Despite it all, the city comes alive in the summer. Whether you're looking for somewhere to recover after braving a sample sale line in SoHo or just want a sidewalk drink with friends, there are plenty of new openings in New York to explore. Here are our favorites.

Bars & Restaurants

Yesterday's

West Village

Yesterday's is one of two sports-related openings on this list, just in time for the World Cup. Inspired by old-school NYC bar culture, the space aims to invoke an instantly familiar feeling upon walking in. While so many minimalist cocktail bars and high-concept spaces open in the city, it's refreshing to have an approachable spot on Bleeker. Yesterday's two-level design balances nostalgia with modern finishings – banquette seating, disco balls, and warm lighting. The menu features wood fire pizza and a comprehensive cocktail menu, and it's open until 4AM on Fridays and Saturdays. And yes, even though it doesn't look like it, they do play the World Cup Games – just look up above the bar to see large TVs effortlessly hiding amongst the wooden panels. Ideal if you want a low-key watch.

Little Falcon

Fort Greene

The newest addition to Fort Greene's booming restaurant scene is the offspring of another. Little Falcon is taking over the current Third Falcon space (which is moving to a new location soon), with the same kitchen, same ethos, and same community spirit. The French concept draws on traditional suppers, boasting a $48 entree + plate + dessert meal deal, featuring oysters, roast chicken, and homemade ice cream. There'll also be a daily chalkboard for specials.

Trudie's Tavern

Carroll Gardens

The latest from the team behind Gertrude's and GERTIE, Trudie's Tavern takes inspiration from classic NYC Taverns and American supper clubs. The menu features rotisserie chicken (the next big thing in NYC food), hot pretzels, and raw bar favorites. The interior is playful and nostalgic (a pastel, illustrated mural hangs in the dining room) with deep mahogany details reminiscent of old New York. It's an all-purpose neighborhood space – stop in for oysters or martinis at the bar, sit down with friends for a birthday, or book a casual date night. It's the first of a new generation of taverns in Brooklyn.

Highball LTD.

Midtown

One of New York City's most exciting new nightlife and events venues, Highball Ltd. brings a fresh take on the classic cocktail lounge to Midtown. Inspired by the glamour of 1930s luxury rail travel, the 11,000 sq ft venue combines rich wood finishes, moody lighting and elevated cocktails to create a memorable backdrop for networking receptions, client entertaining and private celebrations. Event spaces range from intimate semi-private lounges for 25 guests to a fully private room for 70, while exclusive buyouts can host up to 125 guests. With its central location near Grand Central Terminal and distinctive speakeasy-inspired design, Highball Ltd. offers corporate planners a stylish alternative to traditional hotel bars for summer socials, product launches and evening receptions.

Socceria

Greenpoint

From the team of Greenpoint favorite Taqueria Ramirez, Socceria is a safe space for Brooklyn's soccer fans – years in the making, they're finally open just in time for World Cup season. The Mexico City-inspired cantina will feature a comprehensive menu featuring Chef Cervantes's famous tacos alongside chilaquiles, sopes, pork pozole rojo, and an epazote quesadilla. There are also plenty of cocktails, $8 draft beers from eight different countries, and agua frescas. Come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and watch games in between – it's an all-day affair.

Limo Bar

East Village

The ex-staff of Virginia's, Ray's, and The Dead Rabbit have formed an Avengers-style alliance, and it's led to Limo Bar. Designed to transport you to the inside of an 80s-style limo, the experience is described as "polish meets play" with vintage touches – shrimp cocktails, four kinds of martinis, and a happy hour menu. Classy with an old New York feel, this place is gonna get busy fast.

Café Bar J.F.

Willliamsburg

Fans of LLama Inn in Williamsburg would be pleased to know that a ghost of it still remains in the corner building with the emergence of Cafe Bar J.F. Alumni Juan Correa and Francisco Castillo (the J and the F, yes) have moved on from Llama Inn to transform the location into a beloved celebration of South American taverns, particularly inspired by their Peruvian and Chilean heritages. Designed as a third space, the interior encourages lingering, with a menu channeling the laid-back eating and drinking culture of South America. There's empanadas, arroz meloso (a lobster risotto-style dish), and a celery salad that's a decades-old family recipe. Cocktails include regional wines and a signature pisco sour.

The space is also available for private events: it seats 56 in its main dining room with a 10-seat bar, as well as a 21-seat rooftop patio open in the summer. For private events and buyouts, total capacities range from 70 seated guests to up to 150-300 standing guests.

New Paltz Way Hotel

New Paltz, NY

If you need a reset outside of the city this summer, New Paltz Way is one of the Hudson Valley's most exciting new openings. Just 90 minutes north of Manhattan, the boutique hotel combines wellness, outdoor adventure and design-led accommodation, making it an ideal destination for leadership offsites, team retreats or a long weekend escape. Guests can unwind in the hotel's self-guided spa, complete with a sauna, steam room, relaxation pool and ice room, or head straight onto the 23-mile Wallkill Valley Rail Trail for hiking and cycling.
