Our selection of Hammersmith bars

The borough of Hammersmith is a pretty sizable chunk of West London including a good couple of miles of the north bank of the River Thames.

The theatre is what always took us to Hammersmith, but over time we’ve come to appreciate its river views and history—you can find mention of Hammersmith in great works of literature such as Vanity Fair, Great Expectations, and News from Nowhere.

The bars of a place can tell you a lot about its character, and the more time we spend in Hammersmith we like it for more than just it history, theatre, and being a great spot to view the annual Oxford and Cambridge boat races.

So, let’s dive into some of the Hammersmith bars that have caught our attention.

1. Toe tapping and foot stomping live music: The Hammersmith Ram

Hammersmith, London

The Ham Ram is the epitome of a classic local, filled with cosy nooks and a penchant for music that’s live, acoustic, and on the folky side.

Old-fashioned on the outside, the inside of this Hammersmith bar has had a little make-over, it’s laidback and relaxed and peppered throughout with lighting fixtures that lend a warm atmosphere to the place. Not too big, not too small, but the Ram is big on hospitality.

Near Hammersmith station, with plenty of room for private hire, but our favourite things about the Hammersmith Ram is its atmosphere and love for live music.

2. Curiouser and curiouser: Smith’s Cocktail Bar

Hammersmith, London

Smith’s Cocktail Bar is tucked away in the basement of the Brook Green Hotel. It has an elegantly dark floral aesthetic, and mood lighting, and even toes the boundary of theatrical with a table inside of a gilded birdcage, and a signature cocktail served in a birdcage. We get a slightly whimsical Wonderland vibe to the place.

Smith’s has an innovative bespoke cocktail menu that is always changing so no two visits will ever be the same. One of the most curious cocktails we enjoyed was the Seaweed, essentially a kind of Bloody Mary made with Japanese sake, tomato, wasabi, spice, samphire, and black salt flakes.

This Hammersmith bar is also available for exclusive bookings for parties, and we highly recommend it for the atmosphere and genuinely delightful signature cocktails.

3. An event space and bar for kindred spirits: Cellar at Kindred

Hammersmith, London

Kindred is a West London co-working space and event space, Cellar is its casual all-day cafe and bar. It serves everything from morning coffee and seasonal food to cocktails and sustainable European wines.

Cellar has earned its place on our list of Hammersmith bars for offering a standout signature cocktail menu inspired by London heritage, iconic venues, and industry heroes that showcase London-made spirits. We can rave about the rum punch influenced by the area’s Caribbean heritage, and the West 6 Buttered Up made with Portobello Road Buttered Gin.

Kindred has several spaces available for private hire in its stunning Grade II listed building including the Hall for up to 180 people, the Library for up to 50 people, the Salon for up to 40 standing or 25 seated, and several other unique spaces as well.

4. One of the most well-known and well-loved Hammersmith bars: The Dove

Hammersmith, London

The Dove is a riverside pub that has been around since the 17th century and is steeped in history. King Charles II and his mistress often frequented here so you will be drinking in a place that was good enough for the likes of royalty. Other notable names have frequented this spot, and today it stands as one of the most well-known pubs in West London.

In addition to traditional pub offerings, it also has the Guinness World Record for the smallest bar room which you can find next to the main bar. When the weather isn’t dreadful, take your drinks out to the terrace overlooking the Thames for an amazing view.

5. An expansive beer garden with a dedicated BBQ area: The Distillers

Hammersmith, London

Down the street from Hammersmith station is a Fuller’s gastropub that draws its name from distilleries and not the ‘90s American punk rock band. The Distillers has been around since 1919 and has 20 beers on tap and a handpicked wine list.

But unlike other pubs, this Hammersmith bar has a huge outdoor beer garden with a BBQ area and a separate bar, so your co-workers won’t all be squashed on the pavement while they down their post-work pints.

The Distillers’ main bar, beer garden, and upstairs bar are all available for private hire. With a garden like this, we recommend the private hire!

6. A bar to wax lyrical about: The Lyric Bar

Hammersmith, London

The Lyric Bar is located inside the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, an establishment that has been gifting West London with its theatrical talent for 125 years. The bar has access to a roof garden area, a lovely space filled with lush green ferns that is an absolute sun trap in the warmer months.

It goes without saying, but this Hammersmith bar is great for drinks right before a performance—just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time! It also offers private hire in the bar, the roof garden, and the theatre’s front of house, all spaces can be hired separately or together for a special occasion.

7. A bar list isn’t complete without at least one wine bar: Brackenbury Wine Rooms

Hammersmith, London

Brackenbury is a lovely little wine bar near Hammersmith station that is focused on good wine, good food, and good conversation with good people. It has about 150 different wines and you can sample about 40 of them by the glass.

But wine isn’t the only drink they do—the Hammersmith bar offers a selection of beers and spirits, too. We rate the Brackenbury Wine Rooms for its wine menu and selection of French cheeses and Spanish and British cured meats to pair with it.

8. The obligatory pub with a title in its name: Duke of Hammersmith

Hammersmith, London

Conveniently located right next to Hammersmith station, the Duke of Hammersmith is a Brewdog pub with not one but three outdoor drinking areas—great for large groups and post-work drinks. The interior is quite spacious with glass ceilings and modern decor and furnishings throughout as expected from a Brewdog takeover.

While this definitely might seem like just another Duke of [insert place name] pub, Brewdog has really brought it into the 21st century with its spacious interior, 20 beers on tap, and beer gardens with enough greenery and foliage to make an East End hipster envious.

9. The Hammersmith bar with a resident cat: The Cross Keys

Hammersmith, London

Located in the St Peter's Square area of Hammersmith, The Cross Keys is a traditional Fuller’s pub with all the bells and whistles—flower baskets hanging outside, classic interiors with an abundance of wood panelling, a kitchen dishing up Thai favourites, and a cat that likes to hang out at the bar.

Enjoy drinks in the beer garden, a roaring fire, a darts board, Thursday Quiz Night, and stand-up comedy sets every Friday night. The Cross Keys's private function room, The Barn, is available for hire and can accommodate up to 60 people with no hire cost. The pub is quaint, and traditional, with plenty of room to boot!

10. A cheeky drink: Secrets

Hammersmith, London

This may well be a little cheeky of us to add to the list, but there’s certainly an audience for it. Secrets is an exclusive table dancing club down the street from Hammersmith station providing exotic (read erotic) entertainment. We’ve intentionally moved away from using the term ‘gentlemen’s club’ as you’re inclined to find many women and couples patronising the place as men.

Complete with the requisite neon lights, faux-Baroque style furnishings, and a stage. Secrets has little candlelit tables, a fully stocked bar, and the Happiest Happy Hour.

Secrets as a whole venue is available for private hire for a number of events, and the Secret Lounge which boasts its own champagne bar is also available for private hire.
