All about Marylebone wine bars

Marylebone – picturesque tree-lined streets of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings, many of which have been re-purposed into cafés, bars and boutique hotels, this genteel aspect of London draws in tourists and Londoners alike. If there were ever a place in London where you could find traditional wine bars it’d be among Marylebone’s streets of traditional Georgian terraces and red Victorian mansion blocks.

Whether a tourist or a Londoner, here are five Marylebone wine bars in which to take refuge on a rainy day.

1. A Francophile wine list at Clarette

Marylebone, London

Tudor on the outside and Art Deco on the inside, Clarette is the love child of Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos of the Château Margaux family and restaurateur Natsuko Perromat du Marais. Expect relaxed sophistication and elegance so ideal for Marylebone’s pretty streets.

Clarette offers a stunning curated wine list with many available by the glass or as part of daily wine flights, emphasising French varieties and vineyards. The food menu is equally French-inspired and Clarette offers a lunch, à la carte and private dining menu for ten or more people.

The Marylebone wine bar also offers a whisky-tasting experience of three drams of either Scotch or Japanese whisky making it one of our top wine bars in the area because if there’s anything to compete with our taste for wine it’s whisky.

2. Inspired by the bars of the South of France: Angélique’s Wine House

Marylebone, London

Angélique’s is painted a deep purple inside and out, evocative of the lavender fields of Provence, and it is precisely this South of France ambience the Marylebone wine bar wants to capture. So if you’re not fond of purple this may not be for you.

Angélique’s is cosy and down to earth with an exquisite range of wines and champagne, charcuterie and cheese menus, and 200 wine bins (which, so far as we can tell, is a sort of cupboard for bottles and has nothing to do with refuse). Enjoy an outdoor terrace where you can sip wines and champagne, nibble on cheeses and even knock back a couple of cocktails on those sunny summer days.

3. Shop, café and Marylebone wine bar: Le Vieux Comptoir

Marylebone, London

Marylebone loves its French wine. Le Vieux Comptoir is another wine bar (and shop!) specialising in France's wines and serving cheeseboards, charcuterie, deli goods and French cuisine because nothing pairs better with French food than the wines of France.

The hole-in-the-wall wine bar also offers wine tastings and events, champagne, spirits, and the odd cocktail. Le Vieux Comptoir selects and imports some of the finest wines from little-known winemakers in France – expect Bordeaux, Bourgogne and the Rhone Valley to name but a few. The shop offers an extensive range of imported French beers, ciders and spirits.

Make your visit casual, reserve a seat to a sold-out wine-tasting event, or pop along to pair your wine with something out of Le Vieux Comptoir’s classic kitchen like confit duck leg, a quiche of the day or omelette pommes de terre & lardons.

4. An Italian wine bar, deli and shop: The Italians Wine Bar

Marylebone, London

Marylebone’s competition to the French wine bar, The Italians is a cosy neighbourhood spot with a bakery, deli and a morning and afternoon pour of coffee. There are, of course, mixed cheese and cured meat boards, wines by the glass, aperitivo and Cicchetti – you can have a whole day at the Italians from your morning coffee, afternoon cappuccino and late afternoon aperitivo to an evening of cheese and charcuterie.

There is outdoor seating in the front of the shop and wine bar for those languid, indulgent afternoons of wine and crostone tostato with mortadella, burrata and pistachio pesto. Have a few glasses of wine, then have a bottle, order focaccia and then try to pronounce the names of the wines on the menu – like we said, a whole day out with food, drinks and entertainment.

5. Possibly the most modern Marylebone wine bar: 28º–50º Wine Workshop & Kitchen

Marylebone, London

With its industrial-style wine bar and stacks of empty wine crates, 28º–50º is two minutes from Oxford Street and offers everything from breakfast, wine tastings, private dining and cocktails.

With over 30 wines available by the glass, there is plenty to pair with a seasonally changing and modern brasserie-style European menu. An eclectic wine list, cocktails and al fresco dining on Marylebone Lane on the sunnier, warmer days – there’s a lot on offer at 28º–50º.

The wine bar also offers a private dining room with its own bar and a dedicated member of the hospitality team, the room can accommodate up to 15 seated guests and 25 standing for a drink and canapé reception.
