1. Great food at pub prices: the Eagle Farringdon
Everything a pub should be. Good food at great value. Even better drink. All served by lovely staff. In essence the quintessentially British pub in the heart of London’s Farringdon.
The Eagle has just celebrated its 30th birthday having been opened in 1991 by Founder and original Head Chef David Eyre. The Eagle was born out of the breakup of the big breweries' monopoly on pubs, replacing poor food and beer at expensive prices with a casual yet good value approach to dining using top-quality ingredients, something that could only be found in upscale restaurants.
The style of food is “on holiday all around the Mediterranean, with the menu chalked up twice daily five minutes before service. The beer menu is just as impressive with selections from Marstons, Charles Wells and the Hackney brewery and a strong selection of delicious wines all served by the glass. The Eagle is just a ten-minute walk from Farringdon tube.
2. A hidden taco spot in a Farringdon pub: The Gunmakers
In the backstreets of Clerkenwell close to Farringdon, you will find the Gunmakers Pub, a cosy, friendly, yet unusual boozer serving cocktails instead of beer.
What makes the Gunmakers more than your average watering hole is the combination of a warm, welcoming British pub on the outside that serves cocktails, tequila and tacos on the inside.
You will not find many pubs disguised as a taqueria (or traditional Mexican eatery specialising in tacos and burritos). Kickstart the evening with a “Don Negroni” - Cocchi Americano, Belsazar White and Mezcal Verde Momento or a Toluca Manhattan - a Rye Whisky, Nixta corn liquor, sweet vermouth and umami
Then dive into a delicious menu where every taco is lovingly prepared to order serving specialities like the “Camarones” taco - a blend of avocado cream, grilled king prawns, habanero and roasted pineapple salsa topped with pickled red onion or for sharing with friends is their popular Ceviche de Picado, lime cured catch of the day and pico de gallo with tortilla chips.
The Gunmakers is an 8-minute walk from Farringdon tube station.
3. A pub just off Smithfield: The Fox & Anchor Farringdon
Step out of the city and into the cosy, welcoming arms of the Fox and Anchor pub, one of Farringdon’s best alehouses.
Think low beams, wooden panelling and warm, low lighting where you can enjoy the best of British pub classics. Whether that’s a scotch egg with a pint, oysters and Guinness, crispy beer battered fish and chips, flame-grilled steaks sourced from the exceptional butcher’s, Godfrey’s, or one of their famous Sunday roasts that combine the best of British cut meat, crispy goose fat potatoes and the fluffiest of Yorkshire puds topped with delicious gravy you will not be disappointed.
And if you need a hangover cure then make sure you try their infamous City Boy’s breakfast washed down with a spicy Bloody Mary.
So if you’re hankering for post-work pints, looking to host that epic office party or more intimate private dinner or just after a round of impressive seasonal cocktails – then the Fox and Anchor have got you covered.
The Fox & Anchor is on the edge of Smithfield Market, just a five-minute walk to Barbican and Farringdon tube stations.
4. A beautiful pub in Farringdon: The Exmouth Arms
Bang in the middle of the historic Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, you'll find the pub that inspired the market's name. Ever since the Exmouth Arms opened in 1863 it has served tasty ales and lovely food to traders, locals and passersby.
With a welcoming, spacious ground-floor bar it's the perfect spot for after-work drinks; you'll find a rotating range of craft beers and cask ales alongside a wide range of wines and spirits. The menu, a blend of some of your traditional pub favourites such as the chicken & chorizo scotch egg, pork and black pudding sausage roll and classic English roast - the low and slow pork belly with Yorkshire pudding is a favourite.
Upstairs on the first floor, you'll also find a cosy cocktail bar available to hire exclusively for any venue hire London, private event, function or celebration. So what are you waiting for, pop in for a pint and take a look for yourself – it's only 10 minutes from Farringdon tube.
5. An old pub in Farringdon: Ye Old Mitre Pub
Its name 'Ye Olde Mitre' pub says it all - one of London's oldest pubs serving some traditional pub classics alongside a wide selection of cask beers and ales.
Having been built in 1546 for the servants of the Bishops of Ely, Ye Olde Mitre pub is steeped in history. It's where Queen Elizabeth I once danced around the cherry tree (that is now supporting the front) with Sir Christopher Hatton. More ominously it's also near where William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered at Smithfield.
From a food point of view there's nothing fancy on the menu but then that's what they are renowned for, a delicious range of toasties and meat pies to wash down with a tasty pint from their array of cask ales and draught beers.
They also offer several event and function room options for venue hire in central London with two areas available to hire, namely the Bishops Room upstairs catering for 30 or the snug for a smaller group of 8-10. Both are great venue options for a party, work drinks or even a birthday celebration. And if you really want to celebrate you can hire the whole pub for a weekend party.
Situated in Hatton garden, It's just a hair's breadth from Farringdon tube.
